What did you think of this episode?
Sonic!
Good!
Bumpy-wumpy!
Exterminate!
This tops charts for a reason!! Personally I love it, but it wouldn't be top of mine, it would be up there though. So don't blink, here is my review.
The Weeping Angels are just a great monster. Moff wrote them of course, but a lot of credit must go to the design/make-up/prosthetic/choreography teams, they made them insanely scary!
Okay. Not sure. But really really hoping. Pants?
So this is a Doctor-lite (and Martha-lite) episode, but not to worry as it is carried very, very well by Carey Mulligan and Finlay Robertson.
Also a big shout out to Lucy Gaskell who I had a massive crush on when this first aired! I actually think a new refreshed crush was starting to form, but alas, she was touched by an angel and the rest, as they say, is history!!
This is a Moffat script through and through:
Timey wimey - check (double check as we get to here timey wimey for the first time)
Hints at sex - check
Women with names fit for a fairytale - check and check
Iconic monster - check
Everyday things being monsters - big check
I could go on.
It’s kept me going. I’m an old sick man, but I’ve had something to look forward to. Life is long and you are hot.
I think we can safely say now that Love & Monsters walked so Blink could run. A lot of the future Doctor/companion-lite episodes have gone on to be some of the most acclaimed ones. Obviously we have Blink, but we also have Midnight, Turn Left and the wonderful 73 Yards not that long ago.
It must have been such a big risk for RTD and Moffat to take not having the Doctor playing a main role, but when you think about it, a lot of Tens lines in this have gone on to be very fondly remembered, becoming some of the most quoted lines in Doctor Who history - that is a guess but I bet I am right. All that and it was just one Easter Egg on a DVD.
Blink and you're dead, wibbly wobbly timey wimey, the angels have the phone box...
Who blinks? I’m too scared to blink.
There are some fantastic moments as well. The same rain for poor old Billy, go the police you stupid woman, and obviously the amazing scene where Sally and Larry speak to the Doctor on the DVD.
When the Weeping Angels advance on them after the conversation it is pure theatre. The angels look amazing, the shooting of them advancing frame by frame is terrifying, and it is pure edge of your seat thriller material. I love it when Doctor Who is scary, I think that is when it is at its best.
The episode is topped off by a nice scene at the end when Sally realises it is her that sets it all up. I am not going to buck the trend with this - it is a banger episode, no two ways about it. Boy is this a fantastic run of episodes all the way to the finale. Series 3, the gift that keeps on giving.
RATING: Sonic!
BEST LINE: "It's the same rain."
