Doctor Who Series 7, Episode 10 Review: Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS

What did you think of this episode?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS was something I was prepared to be dissapointed by, but you know what, it was rather good.

I am going to get the weakest part out of the way first though - the brothers. There is a complete lack of personality in all of them, a serious lack of personality actually. I did not buy the brother story one bit. Pretending your brother is a robot to pass the time? How daft must you be to buy that for so long, and how much of a dick would you have to be for that to keep you entertained for so long?

Add to that fact they are there to be the bad guys, and bad guys in the most obvious way, well they just didn't work for me. The TARDIS could have been nabbed, set to self-destruct and the Doctor and Clara could have searched for each other without these plums.

"Please, tell me there’s a button you can press to fix this!"

Maybe some parts don't age that well on the CGI and the like, I mean the swimming pool, etc looked a bit ropey, but I can live with that, this is Doctor Who after all. It was fun to see more of the TARDIS though, the library was a particular highlight.

We also get some good Clara growth as well here. I love a companion reacting like I think a companion would, and Clara's screams of utter terror as the creatures approach her are impactful and I loved it. Clara all to often acts so bloody casual to all the problems she is facing (more of that to come in future episodes), and this made a nice change.

This all led to the great scene with the Doctor and Clara on the clifftop, the Doctor trying to figure out who she is and Clara being scared and baffled by him all at once. Bravo Matt Smith and Jenna Louise Coleman.

"We all perform better under pressure. Anybody want to go for 15 minutes? It’s your own time you’re wasting. Salvage of a lifetime. You meant the ship. I meant Clara."

I guess we probably didn't see as much of the TARDIS as we would have liked, but I enjoyed what we did get to see. Doctor Who is all about corridors at the end of the day, so it makes sense there is a lot of them in the TARDIS.

I enjoyed the ending as well, I guess some people may think of it as a cop out, but I am all over timey-wimey explanations - they are in the TARDIS, of course it was going to be timey-wimey!

The Time Zombie creatures were great, and I wish we had more of them over the three brothers. This is still an adventure I enjoyed going back on!

RATING: Sonic!

BEST LINE: "What are you, eh? A trick? A trap!"
