Millie Gibson and UNIT Supply Another Banger Doctor Who Episode - Lucky Day Review

Updated: May 12

What did you think of this episode?

  • Sonic!

  • Good!

  • Bumpy-wumpy!

  • Exterminate!

This is turning into more than a lucky day, this series of Doctor Who is shaping up to be the best in a very, very long time, I had some concerns before airing, but Millie Gibson and the staff of UNIT pulled it out of the bag. Big time.

Before I delve deeper into the episode, I just want to say that this is by far the best we have seen of UNIT and Kate in modern Who. I've not been their biggest fan, but this episode shut me right up. This episode has also made me look forward to The War Between the Land and the Sea more as potentially UNIT and the Doctor are better off apart. We didn't get any wanky call backs to ex companions here, we just got Kate Lethbridge-Stewart being a bit of a bad arse, and I am all for that.

The Vlinx can do one though, utterly pointless again.

"I was eaten by a double bass."

Millie Gibson was amazing, and we got to see a whole lot more to Ruby than we did in the entirety of last series. It was great to see how a companion reacts when their life with the Doctor is over, and Millie played it so well.

Millie Gibson and Jemma Redgrave shone in this episode, but there was one other star - Jonah Hauer-King as Conrad Clark. I was enjoying plodding along with them, was a bit irritated that Ruby settled for him, but I could live with it, then wham, a twist.

It was a bloody good twist as well. Fuck me it is a twist that is going to get some cunts knickers in a twist though - again! It is on the nose and more importantly, it is on a nose that is correct. Imagine the people who will be up in arms about it, the people who will detest the Doctor's speech at the end, those are the exact people this was taking aim at. The people who suck the joy out of watching Doctor Who, the people who throw vile insults at Ncuti for daring to play the Doctor. The people that bullshit their way to making money and/or gaining power.

Do you know the worst thing though? There are more than enough thick twats that lap the shit the Conrad's of this World spew out.

"I don't accept your reality...Doctor. I reject it."

Just look at our local election results for proof? Look at America for proof. How anyone in their right mind can believe the utter shit that comes out of the mouths of cunts Like Farage and Trump is beyond me.

I mean don't get me wrong, Labour are as un-voteable as the fucking Tories - if not more the shit job they are doing out of this golden opportunity - but why not vote Green, or a nice independent, instead of voting for the hate of Reform?

Therein lies the problem for Doctor Who viewing figures in a nutshell I guess? People believe the hate! Well you know what? They are missing some good fucking television!

Anyway, Doctor Who and Pete McTighe took aim, and I think they were spot on. Will it rile up the pricks? Yes. Will it probably have a negative reaction because enough doughnuts believe the pricks? Again, sadly yes.

Jonah Hauer-King looked like he was having fun playing a baddy though, and this led to some tense and thrilling moments for the remainder of the episode. This is where Kate and Ruby shone, seeing the fuck around and find out Kate and the distraught and used Ruby. This episode also took its time, so both of these results felt like a pay off from a slower build up. Something we haven't had a lot of in this new era.

The Shreek played third or fourth fiddle to the real monster - Conrad - but it looked cool and gave us a few jump scares.

"Don't you dare point a gun at her!"

The ending I've already touched on, but fucking hell that was some good stuff on the TARDIS. I wonder if Ncuti was thinking of anyone in particular when he said what he said. Oh and giving Conrad spoilers about his death, Jesus H Doctor! I love it though, an angry Time Lord is a good Time Lord.

I'm making that four out of four very good or fantastic episodes of Doctor Who now, five if we count Joy to the World. So I'm a very happy bunny at the moment.

My only real complaint is that we have gone Doctor-lite again. This wouldn't be an issue, as just like Turn Left, Blink and 73 Yards, this was a great episode, but in an eight episode series it is really noticed. Ncuti is really flying this series, I hope this doesn't break our flow.

What did you think of this episode? Do you enjoy Doctor Who being so on the nose? Does it make you roll your eyes? Let me know in the comments below.

RATING: Sonic!

BEST LINE: "Cowards, like you, weaponising lies. Taking people's insecurity and fear, and making it currency."
